Obituary
Violet went by many names – Violet Dorothy Charlotte Peggy-Lou Purwin Seltzer – but she had a singular spirit and joy for life. Always on the go, she loved the arts – theater, dance, music, movies – discovering new places, new restaurants. She loved traveling with Seymour, being with her friends and attending her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s, well, anything – baseball, soccer, basketball, dance recital, musical, play – she was always there! And, she loved ice cream.
She was a teacher – over 30 years in the Chicago public schools. And she was a tap dancer – twice a week until she hung up her tap shoes at age 86. She loved cooking for her family, always delicious, always much more than anyone could possibly eat. Oh, and she loved ice cream. We will miss her smile, her humor, her unbounded and unconditional love, and her wonderful spirit.
Due to current health mandates, services at Shalom Memorial Park will be private. We will celebrate Violet when we can all be together – because that’s how she would want it! As a passionate, lifelong supporter of theater, dance and the performing arts, a fitting tribute to Violet would be a donation to the non-profit theater or dance company of your choice. For information, including a link to view the service or to leave condolences, Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, (847) 255-3520 or www.shalommemorial.org.

Violet was a friend and favorite coworker. She loved the children, faculty, and staff at Peterson School in Chicago, and we loved her! She will be missed!

My last memory of sweet Vy was on Thanksgiving. She was watching her beloved old time musicals with earphones on; she stopped briefly to welcome me with her wonderful smile. This time dinner was short lived for Vy as her illness was overtaking her. But I have wonderful memories of her love of life and wry sense of humor as we celebrated holidays most recent. She was a lovely woman, a fascinating lady, and a joyous human being – I’m so grateful to have known the irreplaceable, “just Vy”.

I will never forget a trip I took with my Mom Judith- we drove to Chicago and stayed with Auntie Vi and Uncle Seymour. We were there for a family reunion, I actually have a pic which i will share- the date on the photo was 9-30-98. So glad I have this memory and the photo!! I/we had a wonderful time seeing everyone, and I especially loved staying with Vi and Seymour. They were sooo gracious and loving, food all the time! Such fond memories of them, and I am very grateful to have such a loving and special family. She will be greatly missed.

My mother; Shirley Nemer & Vy were best friends for life. We always enjoyed the family get togethers, 4th of July & other holidays. They enjoyed going out to lunch & play mahjong. Those 2 gals really knew how to enjoy life!

Vy and my mother, Beverly Lieberman Lapine, were friends for years. She was a wonderful person and she was the last of the monthly bridge and mah jong club. I remember her showing me her tap dancing and telling her I never could have done it. I think about her often when I think of my mom.
